Accessibility in Deen Coach

Adjustable text size, calmed animations, full Arabic RTL and screen readers respected.

A dedicated Accessibility menu was introduced in version 1.0.0 build 9: interface text slider up to 150%, independent Arabic text slider for the Quran and adhkār, a Reduce Motion toggle synchronised with the system setting, a Tajwīd pattern mode for colour-blind users, a shortcut to the system accessibility settings, full Arabic RTL support, and lightweight downloads for constrained devices.

Why accessibility matters

A religious app must be usable by everyone: an elderly person who needs larger text, a user sensitive to motion, a visually impaired person relying on a screen reader, an Arabic speaker expecting native RTL layout, a household sharing a modest device with little storage. Deen Coach treats these situations as baseline requirements, not as advanced options buried at the bottom of the settings.

Making access to the Quran, adhkār and prayer easier for the largest number is part of the ṣadaqah jāriyah that motivates the app. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Text adaptation

The `Settings > Accessibility` menu offers two distinct sliders that combine intelligently: a slider for the Latin interface text up to 150%, and an independent slider for the Arabic text of the Quran, adhkār and invocations. The app fully respects the system text-size setting on top (iOS `Settings > Display > Text Size`, Android `Settings > Display > Font Size`). The two multipliers (user and system) compose without forcing a choice between them.

  • Interface text slider: indicative range up to 150%, snapped to 5% steps.
  • Arabic text slider: independent setting to preserve Muṣḥaf readability.
  • Automatic composition with the system `textScaler`: no setting to duplicate.
  • VoiceOver / TalkBack announcements in percentage for each slider.

Reduced motion

A Reduce Motion toggle softens or removes the most prominent visual transitions (highlight effects, fades, micro-animations). This preference works as a logical union with the equivalent system setting (`Reduce Motion` on iOS, `Animations` on Android): if either the user or the system has enabled reduction, animated widgets adapt. No personal health information is read; it is a simple interface preference.

  • Instant setting, persisted locally on the phone.
  • Honours the system `MediaQuery.disableAnimationsOf`.
  • No gamification or intrusive sound effects to disable on top.

Screen reader (VoiceOver, TalkBack)

The app is designed to work with each platform's native screen readers: **VoiceOver** on iOS and **TalkBack** on Android. Labels, action hints and value announcements (slider percentages, toggle states) are provided to the accessibility APIs. An iOS user never sees "TalkBack" in the interface and an Android user never sees "VoiceOver": the screen-reader name resolves to the actual platform. A dedicated section in the Accessibility menu offers a direct shortcut to the system accessibility settings.

  • Minimum 48 dp touch targets on accessibility controls.
  • `MergeSemantics` applied on toggles to avoid double announcement.
  • Muṣḥaf visual indicators (notes, highlights) carry localised semantic labels.

VoiceOver and TalkBack compatibility is verified as a priority on the main screens (Accessibility, Notifications, Quran, adhkār, Reminders hub). Polish continues screen by screen. If you find an unread or ambiguous label, write to `[email protected]`: every field report is handled and the fix shipped in a future release.

Arabic RTL direction

When the interface is in Arabic, the app fully switches to RTL (right-to-left): navigation bar, settings screens, surah lists, monthly prayer-times calendar, reminders hub, "What's New" screen and even the update notifications respect the native Arabic direction. The Noto Naskh Arabic font ensures readability of religious passages. The main screens are available in Arabic without loss of functionality compared to French or English; polish of secondary screens continues release by release and every report to `[email protected]` is handled.

  • FR / EN transliterations preserved in place when content is bilingual.
  • Adhkār, invocations and ḥadīths displayed in the text's native direction.
  • Three interface languages (FR, EN, AR) covered from first launch.

Lightweight downloads

Many users share a constrained device or have little mobile data. Deen Coach ships the essential religious content at first launch (Madanī Muṣḥaf, 267 invocations from Ḥiṣn al-Muslim, ḥadīths from the main corpus, sourced daily reminders). Per-reciter audio packs and additional tafsīr packs are **optional** and **downloadable on demand**, then fully usable offline. The user remains in control of what occupies their storage.

  • No permanent server dependency for core functions.
  • Audio packs organised per reciter, removable or re-installable at any time.
  • No advertising prefetch, no silent unsolicited download.
