Our religious methodology

Deen Coach is a Muslim project, transparent about its methodology. All religious content follows the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, understood by the path of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ: the Ṣaḥābah, the Tābiʿūn and the Atbāʿ al-Tābiʿīn. This page explains our frame of reference, the sources we use, the scholars we refer to, and the editorial posture we hold on sensitive topics. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah following the way of the Salaf

The project identifies with Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, that is, those who follow what is reported from the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and the community of his Companions, in the understanding transmitted from generation to generation by the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ. This path favours taslīm (submission) to established texts, attachment to the jamāʿah of the Companions, and caution before passions and rationalist interpretations cut off from the sources.

Hierarchy of sources

Four sources, in this strict order, understood according to the way of the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ.

1. The Noble Quran

The Quranic text in its Arabic language, unaltered and preserved. Translations serve only as comprehension support, never as a substitute. No modernist, allegorical or symbolic reading of the text is retained against the literal meaning understood by the Salaf.

2. The authentic Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

Ḥadīths classified as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) or ḥasan (good) by recognised scholars of ʿilm ar-rijāl and chain criticism. No weak (ḍaʿīf) narration is used as proof of a ḥukm (religious ruling), even if it may be mentioned for indication in certain pedagogical contexts with explicit mention of its grade.

3. The Ijmāʿ (consensus)

The consensus of the scholars of the Community, foremost that of the Companions. The Ijmāʿ never contradicts the Quran or the authentic Sunnah: it reveals the shared understanding of the first generation, who were the closest to the Prophet ﷺ and therefore the most able to grasp the Legislator's intent.

4. Qiyās (analogy) consistent with the texts

Analogical reasoning, when it links a new situation to a case settled by the texts through an explicit causal link (ʿillah) recognised by the ʿulamāʾ. Qiyās does not apply in matters of ʿaqīdah (creed) nor in purely ritual ʿibādāt, whose form is fixed by revelation.

The understanding of the Salaf: three generations

The Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ are the first three generations of the Muslim community, praised as the best by the Prophet ﷺ. Reading the texts according to their understanding is not nostalgic revivalism; it is following the only reliable relay that transmitted the meaning alongside the text.

The Ṣaḥābah

The Companions of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: those who met him as believers and died in that state. Their understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, transmitted directly through prophetic teaching, constitutes the first and highest interpretive authority in Ahl al-Sunnah.

The Tābiʿūn

Those who met the Companions as believers and received knowledge from them. Their generation continues the prophetic understanding with a short and reliable chain.

The Atbāʿ al-Tābiʿīn

The successors of the Tābiʿūn. This is the era when the great jurisprudential tradition crystallises, with the imāms of the four major Sunni schools. Their teaching remains anchored in the way of the Salaf and constitutes a legitimate reference for following generations.

The canonical collections used

The references Deen Coach uses for ḥadīths come from the great recognised Sunni collections.

Al-Kutub al-Sittah (the six collections)

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Sunan al-Nasāʾī, Sunan Ibn Mājah. The two Ṣaḥīḥ are the most authentic after the Quran according to Ahl al-Sunnah scholars; the four Sunan gather most of the jurisprudential aḥādīth with their authenticity grade indicated.

Additional major collections

Al-Muwaṭṭaʾ of imām Mālik ibn Anas (one of the oldest methodical fiqh collections) and al-Musnad of imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (vast collection of ḥadīths ordered by Companion transmitter). These two works are essential references for Ahl al-Sunnah ʿulamāʾ.

Explicitly referenced scholars

When Deen Coach refers to an opinion, an explanation or a fatwa, it is always a scholar recognised in the Ahl al-Sunnah tradition, classical or contemporary. No citation is fabricated: every reference is sourced from an identifiable book or fatwa.

Classical scholars

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah. Their works are a major reference in ʿaqīda, comparative fiqh, uṣūl and tazkiyat al-nafs according to the way of the Salaf.

Contemporary scholars

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Ibn Bāz (former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia), Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn, Shaykh Muḥammad Nāṣir ad-Dīn al-Albānī, Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān, as well as the fatāwā of the Lajnah al-Dāʾimah lil-Buḥūth al-ʿIlmiyyah wa al-Iftāʾ (Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Iftāʾ of Saudi Arabia). Their status as recognised scholars in the Sunni tradition is widely attested.

Verification of ḥadīths

Every ḥadīth used is tied to its source collection (Bukhārī, Muslim, etc.) and its authenticity grade (ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, ḍaʿīf) according to the judgments of recognised scholars of ʿilm al-ḥadīth. When scholarly opinions differ on the grade, the app mentions this explicitly rather than ruling unilaterally. No ḥadīth presented as proof of a ḥukm carries the ḍaʿīf grade.

Topics handled with prudence: referral to a qualified scholar

On sensitive questions (complex contemporary finance, divorce, inheritance in a non-Muslim context, advanced medicine, etc.) Deen Coach presents the general framework as understood by Ahl al-Sunnah, mentions the recognised positions of scholars, and systematically refers to a qualified scholar for a personal decision. The app does not deliver individual fatāwā. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Deen Coach's editorial commitment

Five concrete commitments summarise our posture: no fabrication, sourced references, neutrality of treatment, gentle tone, and systematic referral to a qualified scholar for any personal decision.

No fabrication

No ḥadīth number, no book page, no scholarly citation is fabricated. In case of uncertainty, the app stays sober, phrases prudently, and adds Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Sourced references

Every citation is tied to an identifiable book or fatwa, so that the user can, if they wish, return to the source for verification.

Neutrality of treatment

No polemic, no personal condemnation, no sectarian debate. Deen Coach presents what is taught by Ahl al-Sunnah following the Salaf, without engaging in personal disputes.

Tone: gentleness, clarity, humility

The tone is that of friendly counsel and transmission, not of judgment. Religious knowledge belongs to Allāh, and the learner remains free in their progression.

Referral to a qualified scholar

For any personal decision, the user is invited to consult a trusted qualified scholar, who can take their specific situation into account. An app does not replace this counsel.
