Learning to read the Quran
The Noble Quran is the speech of Allāh ﷻ, revealed to the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and preserved intact for fourteen centuries. Learning to read it is an immense merit: the Prophet ﷺ said that « the best of you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it » (reported by al-Bukhārī). For the French-speaking or Arabic-speaking beginner, the path is progressive and accessible with patience and good method. This hub presents the typical learning path: recognising the alphabet, short and long vowels, word-by-word reading, basics of tajwīd according to the transmission Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim through the route (ṭarīq) of al-Shāṭibiyyah, then memorisation (ḥifẓ). The Deen Coach app accompanies each step with the Madinah Mushaf KFGQPC, a recitation coach and voice search. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.
Why learn the Quran
The Quran is the primary source of Islam. Allāh ﷻ commands the Prophet ﷺ in sūrat al-Muzzammil: « wa rattil al-Qurʾāna tartīlā » (« and recite the Quran with measured recitation », 73:4). Learning to read it in its language of revelation, Arabic, gives direct access to divine speech without intermediary. The merit is also quantifiable: according to a ḥadīth reported by al-Tirmidhī, each letter recited is worth a good deed multiplied by ten. For the French-speaking Muslim, it is also the path to a deeper understanding of one's own prayer, of which the Fātiḥah is the pillar.
The stages of learning
Learning follows a tried-and-tested order, taught in traditional kuttāb and adopted by contemporary pedagogical methods.
1. Alphabet and short vowels
Recognising the 28 letters in their four forms (isolated, initial, medial, final), then reading with short vowels: fatḥah, kasrah, ḍammah and sukūn. This is the absolute foundation.
2. Word-by-word reading
Assembling letters into syllables, then short words, then simple verses (typically the short sūras of Juzʾ ʿAmma, the 30th part of the Quran). One begins with sūrat al-Fātiḥah, indispensable to the ṣalāh.
3. Basics of tajwīd
Progressive learning of pronunciation rules: madd (lengthening), idghām (assimilation), ikhfāʾ (concealment), iẓhār (clarity), points of articulation (makhārij). Always with a qualified teacher, ideally through oral transmission.
4. Memorisation (ḥifẓ)
Once reading is fluent, memorisation can begin. The classical method is to memorise from Juzʾ ʿAmma (starting from the end), with daily revision. Constancy matters more than quantity.
Tajwīd according to Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim through al-Shāṭibiyyah
The Quran was transmitted through ten canonical qirāʾāt (readings), themselves branching into several riwāyāt and ṭuruq. The reading most widespread in the contemporary Muslim world is that of Ḥafṣ ibn Sulaymān (d. 180 H) from his teacher ʿĀṣim al-Kūfī (d. 127 H), via the route (ṭarīq) of imām al-Shāṭibī (d. 590 H) recorded in his famous poem Ḥirz al-Amānī. This is the transmission used in the Madinah Mushaf KFGQPC (King Fahd Glorious Qurʾān Printing Complex) and in the Deen Coach app. Any other authentic qirāʾah is valid; this choice simply reflects majority usage.

Practise with Deen Coach
The Deen Coach app integrates the Madinah Mushaf in KFGQPC format (the reference layout of the King Fahd Complex in Medina), a recitation coach with four learning modes (listen, follow, repeat, self-evaluation), and voice search that lets you find a verse from a few spoken words. All recitations come from recognised qārīs, without musical addition or artificial effect.
