Recitation coach

Four guided recitation modes, pedagogical feedback after each verse, weak-passage journal.

The Recitation coach turns a reading session into a structured exercise: pick a surah or a verse range, recite aloud, the app compares your recitation with the expected text and returns visual feedback after each verse (validated, weak, skipped). At the end of the session, a recap shows accuracy, fluency, duration and the list of weak passages, ready to be revised. The coach follows the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim transmission via al-Shāṭibiyya, does not replace a qualified teacher, and is meant as a self-correction companion between sessions with a shaykh.

Four recitation modes

The coach offers four modes calibrated to your intent: free recitation, guided verse-by-verse recitation, targeted revision of weak passages, and prayer preparation. Each mode starts with a surah pick (with search) then a verse range, or uses an automatic range for specialised modes. The current mode is kept between sessions.

  • Free mode: recite a surah from start to finish, at your own pace.
  • Guided mode: the app shows each verse and waits for your recitation.
  • Revision mode: targeted sessions on verses flagged as weak in previous sessions.
  • Prayer preparation mode: surah al-Fātiḥa and short surahs to prepare for ṣalāt.

Voice recognition

The coach uses your phone's native voice recognition engine (Apple on iPhone, Google or OEM on Android) with an Arabic locale. The mic activates on demand, listens for one cycle (up to twenty seconds) with a three-second silence window to close automatically, then the recognised text is compared with the expected verse via a normalised Arabic comparator (diacritic stripping, word-level alignment).

  • Arabic locale (ar_SA) by default, configurable by your OS.
  • Mic permission requested on use, never at install.
  • No audio stream sent by Deen Coach to a third-party server.
  • Real-time display of the partial recognised text, to support self-correction.

Pedagogical feedback after each verse

Each verse gets a short, explicit return: verse validated (the recitation matches the expected text closely enough), weak passage (confidence or similarity is below the 60 % threshold), or verse skipped (you chose to skip). Feedback is visible immediately, with an icon and a color code. Weak passages are recorded in a session event journal for later revision.

  • Accuracy score (0 to 100): similarity between expected and recognised text.
  • Fluency score (0 to 100): indicator derived from the speech rhythm.
  • Weighted overall score: accuracy 60 %, fluency 40 %.
  • Completion rate: verses recited / verses requested.

Scores are technical indicators of text / voice matching. They do not measure the quality of the tilāwa, the beauty of recitation, or the fine accuracy of tajwīd, which remain the domain of a qualified shaykh.

Mode detail: free, guided, revision, prayer prep

Free mode lets you recite a surah from start to finish without interruption, ideal for daily reading. Guided mode shows each verse, waits for your recitation, then shows the next: useful for learners who want a tight frame. Revision mode automatically builds the session from verses flagged as weak in your past sessions: zero selection effort. Prayer preparation mode offers al-Fātiḥa and a curated set of short surahs (al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, al-Nās, and others), with one clear intent: strengthen recitation during ṣalāt.

Methodology and limits

The coach follows the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim transmission via the path (ṭarīq) of al-Shāṭibiyya, which is the most widespread reading in the Muslim world today and the only chain offered by Deen Coach in this first version. The Arabic comparator normalises the text (stripping tashkīl diacritics, aligning hamzas and alif) before measuring similarity: this makes the comparison robust against small vocalic variations that voice recognition does not always capture, but it also means that fine tajwīd nuances (madd, ghunna, qalqala, ikhfāʾ, idghām, etc.) are not evaluated by the algorithm.

The Recitation coach is a self-training tool, not a substitute for talaqqī: the oral transmission of the Quran with an authorised shaykh remains the indispensable path for tajwīd validation, ijāza granting, and fine correction of makhārij al-ḥurūf (articulation points). Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Offline and local data

The Quranic text, surah and verse partition, recorded sessions, weak passages, event journal and cumulative scores all live entirely locally on the device, inside the SQLite database secured by the OS sandbox. Only voice recognition depends on the phone's native engine, as explained above. In V1, no cloud sync is offered: your sessions stay private and out of reach of Deen Coach servers.

Coach FAQ: before you start

A few reminders to get the most out of the coach: recite in a quiet environment (background noise degrades recognition), speak at a normal voice (neither too quiet nor too loud, no shouting), and observe the pauses between verses (waqf) so the engine has time to close recognition. If the session stops unexpectedly, it is usually a native-engine issue or a missing language pack: see the privacy FAQ below.
