Learning prayer in Islam

The ṣalāh is the second pillar of Islam after the shahāda, and the first deed about which the servant will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection. It is the direct, daily link between the believer and his Lord Allāh ﷻ, performed five times a day according to a form prescribed by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. Learning to pray correctly is not optional: it is an individual obligation upon every adult Muslim of sound mind. This hub presents the learning path of the ṣalāh as understood by Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah: prerequisites of purification and orientation, the unfolding of the units (rakaʿāt), supplications reported from the Prophet ﷺ. For the complete step-by-step description, a detailed article is available. The Deen Coach app then accompanies daily practice with accurate prayer times, Qibla and a learning guide. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.

Why learn to pray

The ṣalāh is obligatory upon every adult Muslim of sound mind. Allāh ﷻ says in sūrat al-Baqarah: « Be constant in the ṣalawāt » (2:238). It structures the believer's day around five appointments with his Lord: Fajr, Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ. It is also the first deed about which the servant will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection, as the prophetic tradition teaches. Learning to perform it according to the Sunnah honours this direct link with Allāh ﷻ and builds faith on stable foundations.

Prerequisites before praying

Before entering the ṣalāh, several conditions must be met. They are unanimously taught in the works of fiqh of Ahl al-Sunnah.

Purification (ṭahārah)

The believer must be in a state of ritual purity: minor ablution (wuḍūʾ) or full ablution (ghusl) as required. Purity also concerns the body, clothes and place of prayer.

Facing the Qibla

The Muslim faces the Kaʿbah in Mecca (the Qibla). If the exact direction cannot be determined, one prays according to one's ijtihād (effort of discernment) and the prayer is valid.

Clothing (satr al-ʿawrah)

Covering the ʿawrah is a condition of validity. For a man, at minimum from navel to knees; for an adult woman, the whole body except the face and hands according to the majority ruling.

Entry of the prayer time

Each obligatory prayer has a prescribed time. Praying before its time is invalid; delaying it without excuse is a major sin. Accurate times vary by latitude and the calculation method used.

The unfolding of the ṣalāh

The ṣalāh proceeds in units called rakaʿāt (two for Fajr, three for Maghrib, four for Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr and ʿIshāʾ). Each rakʿah follows a common structure inherited from the Prophet ﷺ through uninterrupted transmission.

Key steps

The intention (niyyah, of the heart), the opening takbīr (Allāhu akbar) raising the hands, the recitation of the Fātiḥah followed by verses from the Quran, the rukūʿ (bowing), the rising, the two sujūd (prostrations) with a brief sitting between them, then the repetition for the following rakaʿāt. The prayer concludes with the tashahhud, the ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ, and the final taslīm to the right and then to the left.

The spirit: khushūʿ

Beyond the gestures, the ṣalāh is inhabited by khushūʿ: presence of heart, awareness of standing before Allāh ﷻ, calmness in each position (ṭumaʾnīnah). It is the work of a lifetime, not of a day.
