Akhlaq: character and good manners
Akhlāq, adab and khuluq: prophetic character as the fulfilment of the dīn according to Ahl al-Sunnah.
The Prophet ﷺ said, in a well-established meaning, that he was sent to perfect noble character (makārim al-akhlāq). And Allāh Himself praised His Messenger ﷺ by saying: « Wa innaka la-ʿalā khuluqin ʿaẓīm » — « And indeed you are of a great moral character » (sūrat al-Qalam, 68:4). Akhlāq is therefore not an add-on to the dīn but one of its expected fruits and one of the most powerful means of inviting people to Islam. This pillar gathers articles on character and manners in Islam: truthfulness (ṣidq), trustworthiness (amānah), patience (ṣabr), forbearance (ḥilm), modesty (ḥayāʾ), kindness to parents (birr al-wālidayn), maintaining kinship ties (ṣilat al-raḥim), goodness to neighbours, restraint of the tongue, and the place of tazkiyah al-nafs as an inward journey rooted in the Quran and authentic Sunnah. The tone is positive, focused on effort and on the prophetic model (sūrat al-Aḥzāb, 33:21), without naming or judging the faults of others. The main references are al-Adab al-Mufrad by Imām al-Bukhārī, Riyāḍ aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn by Imām al-Nawawī, Sharḥ al-Nawawī ʿalā Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and Madārij al-Sālikīn by Ibn al-Qayyim. Wa Allāhu aʿlam.
